G-IKON, a VANS RV-4

I am building a VANS RV-4 aircraft. If your not involved in homebuilt aircraft it wont be too interesting, but if you are a part of that elite group it just might be. My intention is to include ONLY the interesting details, so the rate of change will be quite slow!

Firewall forward is nearly complete.

The wife has been away a few days so progress has been dramatic even if I am loosing weight!

My oil cooler /cabin heat system was completed today, and the carb heat system a few days ago.

You can see details of both if you go here, together with mounting details of the pressure sensors and the short RV4 oil dipstick.

At this stage it is nearly complete at the front. I need to hook up the ignition leads, terminate a couple of wires where I ran out of parts, and I guess it would be a good idea to bolt the prop on soon. Oh. and before anyone worries. there are quite a few nuts/bolts/washers to sort out yet!

Hi Retro,
Nice work on your 4!. I am a builder/operator of a 4 in Canada (first flew in 1995/ 450 hours todate). I picked up the Forum thread on firewall issues & I thought I would recommend something. I have the strengthened firewall brackets but have developed cracks in lower SSt firewall corners & bottom firewall skin. I plan on putting close tolerance .190" bolts to replace exsiting 1/8 rivets in bottom corner weldments (the belly rivets inboard of corner firewall/mount bolt) as these are smoking. You can keep an eye on it over time if you do not wish to do now but eventually I would not be surprised if you have to do something as 3 or 4 rivets holding that bracket to bottom firewall angle does not seem right.

Great work & happy test flying
Keith

I like the idea of the .19" bolts. I will think about that.

Yes, I am getting ther. The wings went on yesterday. Take a look at the fuselage entries.

Thanks for the kind words, Steve.
